Today, 5 June, is World Environment Day (WED)! Commemorated yearly on the initiative of the United Nations, the objective is to raise awareness and enhance political action. This year’s theme is ‘Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change’ – it focuses on the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen later in this year, and links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.
The ITER project is paramount in the fight against climate change. Fusion energy does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions that can cause global warming and climate change – in fact, one kilogram of fusion fuel produces the same amount of energy as 10,000,000 kilograms of fossil fuel. What’s more, the fuel supply needed for fusion is almost limitless and widely available around the globe. Fusion energy has the potential to provide a sustainable solution to European and global energy needs.
