Fusion for Energy (F4E) showcased its work towards achieving fusion energy at the European Parliament in Brussels this week, at an event organised by the EU Agencies Network. With the legislature recently starting, F4E joined 45 EU Agencies and Joint Undertakings by networking with parliamentarians and presenting their impact on the lives of EU citizens.
For three days, EU lawmakers were able to visit the F4E information stand to learn about the progress of ITER and the benefits of developing fusion energy in Europe. In addition, the Directors of EU Agencies met with various members of the European Parliament. They discussed some key issues for the legislative period, such as the next EU budget or strategic priorities of the new Commission, highlighting the contribution of EU agencies to tackling these challenges.
Financed by the EU budget and located across Europe (the main headquarters of F4E are in Barcelona), the EU agencies carry out technical tasks for different policy areas, from food safety to fisheries or transport, to name a few. Thanks to their expertise and experience, they deliver on EU’s priorities and can be an asset to legislators shaping Europe’s future.
F4E, responsible for providing the European contribution to ITER, is an illustrative case. The development of fusion energy lies at the junction of harnessing a reliable and sustainable energy source and reinforcing Europe as an innovative and competitive force in the global economy – both topics expected to remain at the top of the EU’s agenda for the next five years.
In this context, the new F4E vision takes a strategic, long-term outlook. In addition to ITER, the Broader Approach and DONES, F4E will work to strengthen the European supply chain and nurture the knowledge and talent pool for the future fusion market in Europe. As the EU is developing a comprehensive fusion strategy, F4E is well-positioned to take a leading role in coordinating Europe’s journey towards commercial fusion.
