See the progress of ITER’s Neutral Beam Test Facility

Inside ITER’s Neutral Beam Test Facility, Padua, Italy 2017

ITER will be the biggest-ever fusion device generating a plasma with a volume close to 840 m3 at 150 million ˚ C, ten times the temperatures at the core of the sun.

To achieve these extremely hot temperatures, powerful heating systems using high-energy beams will need to be developed in order to push together the nuclei, and trigger off a fusion reaction.

To test the Neutral Beam Injectors, a facility is set up in Padua, Italy.

The Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF), receives contributions from F4E, ITER International Organization, India’s and Japan’s ITER Domestic Agencies, and Italy’s Consorzio RFX, the host of the infrastructure.

The NBTF consists of two test beds: SPIDER (Source for Production of Ion Deuterium Extracted from Radio frequency plasma) and MITICA (Megavolt ITER Injector and Concept Advancement).

We used a drone to fly inside SPIDER and MITICA so that you witness the progress of the work and the installation of various pieces of equipment.
